Making Friends Through Art |
|
A wonderful bridging of generations occurred over this past summer. Some of the children enrolled in Martha & Mary's Kids' Club, ranging from 10-12 years old, teamed up with residents at the Health & Rehab Center as part of their summer activities. The resulting product was a series of portraits that are now being displayed in the community. The imaginative stories that accompany the portraits are loosely based on actual biographies of the residents and children. As many readers of The Heritage know, Martha & Mary has offered a variety of services to the community for more than 114 years and is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations of its kind in this region. Each year we serve more than 1,800 individuals and families in the West Sound through innovative programs related to child care, housing, hospice, memory care, long-term care and rehab. Martha & Mary strives to create a meaningful community in which the children, residents, staff and volunteers grow in understanding and appreciation of the gifts both young and old bring into our lives. This project embodies our commitment to enhancing the vitality of seniors and children with our focus on healthcare, nurturing and quality of life. This commitment also includes nearly $1 million in charity care that Martha & Mary provides to the community each year as we strive to bridge the growing gap between the cost of services and the resources received. Over the coming months, this exhibit will be displayed at locations around the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas as part of an ongoing celebration of Martha & Mary's work of bridging generations and enriching lives. A set of four note cards has also been created from the portraits which are available in the gift shop at the Health & Rehab Center for $5. If you have questions or would like some note cards, please contact Rob Gelder at (360) 394-4004. |
