Intergenerational Activities |
The Intergenerational Program has been a vital part of Martha & Mary Children's Services for over twenty years, and has been nationally recognized for continued high quality outcomes for children and seniors. Our intergenerational program gives children the opportunity to visit with the “grammas and grampas” who reside in nursing homes. The importance of this program is heartwarming. As an organization that serves both generations, we are aware that this is a time when children often live far from their grandparents and older adults tend to be isolated from others. Unique ways must be found for our children and older adults to connect and interact. The IGP program is creating bonds between children and older adults. Our intent is to create meaningful relationships for a higher quality of life that contributes to the whole community. The seniors benefit from new and positive relationships involving touches, activities, communication, sharing and stimulation, while passing on their knowledge, skills, and values to the next generation. Our children gain one on one attention, increase their self worth and sense of purpose, learn compassion and acceptance of the aged and their life support systems such as walkers and wheel chairs. These lessons will help them to grow up as competent, caring and healthy adults with more positive images of the elderly. Benefits for our community will include a higher awareness of the elder citizen’s needs and for the need for more programs and support for their daily quality of life. Other benefits are closer ties and friendships, partnerships among different organizations, dissolving stereotypes and barriers that exist, and enhancing traditions and culture in the community. |
