At Martha & Mary we are blessed with the support of ten Greater Kitsap churches. These Lutheran congregations play an important part in helping us meet our mission of caring for children, seniors and children in our community.

Church members serve on our board of trustees and participate in various committees, sharing both their time and expertise. They also make financial gifts and in-kind donations that support our care programs.  And, they pray for us — for the children and seniors we serve, as well as our outstanding employees.

Earlier this month, Poulsbo First Lutheran Church demonstrated their devotion to our mission of caring by sending over 20 volunteers, including Pastor Kent Shane, to improve and enhance our Martha & Mary KIDS Child Care Center.  This mighty team of inspired congregation members spent a full day building, repairing and replacing numerous elements of this care facility to make it a better place for both children and staff alike.

The volunteers started on the playground where they built a magnificent musical wall for children to experiment with sounds. They also repaired the treasured on-site caboose play structure and added freshly painted arrows on the bike path.  Additionally, the covered porch got a needed power-washing and the children’s garden a thorough weeding.

Inside the facility, the team of volunteers sewed and mended dress up clothes and baby doll blankets. They even returned button eyes to a beloved giant stuffed bear that had been loved “sightless” by adoring children.  They even took time to paint the staff break room, a special gift and surprise for our hardworking Child Care Center staff.

Haley Kunka, Child Care Center Director and Berni Booher, Program Supervisor fueled the volunteer crew with a wonderful lunch. It was intended to thank them for their time and amazing work.  However, we are unsure how we could ever fully relay our gratitude to Poulsbo First Lutheran and their special congregation members that have done so much for Martha & Mary KIDS.
